When is the best time to see the flowers?
Spring in New Zealand runs from September to November, but the ideal period depends on the type of flowers you want to see.
For cherry blossoms, daffodils, tulips and other spring flowers around Queenstown, the best time is generally between mid-September and mid-October. Cherry blossoms usually start blooming in early September, but wind and rain can quickly shorten the flowering period.
For lupins, you’ll need to wait a little longer. They generally bloom from late November to late December, with the most colour usually appearing during the first few days of December. The flowering period can vary by around two weeks depending on temperatures, rain and wind.
If flowers are the main reason for your trip, it’s therefore best to plan your itinerary around the flowering season.
Option 1: A day around Queenstown
If you’re short on time, there’s no need to travel across the South Island to find flowers. Queenstown already has several easily accessible spots that can be explored on foot.

Queenstown Gardens
Start at Queenstown Gardens, where you’ll find daffodils, tulips and cherry blossoms in spring.
The gardens also offer views of the lake, mountains and surrounding green spaces. It’s a great first stop before continuing your walk towards the town centre.
Lake Esplanade
From Queenstown, head towards Lake Esplanade.
The walkway is flat and accessible. It follows the shores of Lake Whakatipu and offers views of The Remarkables, Queenstown Gardens, Walter Peak and Cecil Peak.
Queenstown Mall & The Village Green
Finish your day in central Queenstown.
Queenstown Mall is lined with flowering trees, while The Village Green comes to life with its oriental flowering cherry trees.
Take a break for lunch or enjoy a coffee at one of the outdoor cafés.

Option 2: Queenstown, Arrowtown & Wanaka
To experience more of the surrounding scenery, take the road to Arrowtown, then continue on to Wanaka.

Continue towards Wanaka via the Crown Range.
The road passes through Cardrona Valley before climbing to Crown Saddle at 1,076 metres above sea level. You may spot patches of colour across the area in spring.
Once in Wanaka, take some time to explore around the lake.
Wanaka Lavender Farm
For a garden-focused stop, visit Wanaka Lavender Farm at 36 Morris Road.
It is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm during spring and summer. Entry fees apply and the visit takes around an hour. A picnic area is also available during the warmer months.

Option 3: The lupin road trip to Lake Tekapo
If you want to see the lupin landscapes featured in so many New Zealand photos, you’ll need to travel a little further.
The must-see destination is Lake Tekapo, in the Mackenzie Basin.
But be aware: don’t plan to drive there and back from Queenstown in a single day.
Queenstown and Lake Tekapo are around 256 km apart, or approximately 3 hours 10 minutes each way via State Highway 8. Once you factor in stops, it becomes a substantial day of driving.
It’s best to stay overnight in Twizel or Tekapo.

The route is around 70 km and takes approximately one hour. If the weather is poor, the route via Cromwell is longer but gentler.
Wanaka → Lindis Pass → Omarama
From Wanaka, continue towards Omarama via Lindis Pass.
The journey is around 114 km and takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Lindis Pass can be one of the places where you spot the first lupin blooms.
Omarama → Twizel → Lake Tekapo
From Omarama, allow around 25 minutes to Twizel, followed by approximately 40 minutes to Lake Tekapo.
Once you arrive, take your time to explore the different viewpoints.
Pines Beach
Start at Pines Beach, on the shores of the lake.
It is generally quieter than some of the better-known spots and offers the chance to find clusters of lupins.
Church of the Good Shepherd
This is the iconic Lake Tekapo view: the church, lupins, turquoise lake and mountains in the background.
It is also one of the busiest locations. For better light and to avoid some of the crowds, visit at sunrise.
Lake Tekapo Lookout
Finish at the lookout above the town for a wider view across the basin.
Duration: 2 days minimum
Best time: late November to late December
Lupin peak: usually early December
Option 4: The ultimate South Island road trip

Continue to Twizel, before entering the Mackenzie Basin.
Lake Tekapo
Continue to Lake Tekapo, which becomes particularly interesting towards the end of spring for lupin season.
Visit Pines Beach, followed by the famous Church of the Good Shepherd. For better light and to avoid some of the crowds, aim for sunrise.
Finish at Lake Tekapo Lookout for a panoramic view across the basin.
Aoraki / Mount Cook
Continue to Aoraki / Mount Cook to experience the alpine landscapes of the Mackenzie Basin.
This is a great opportunity to pause between the lakes and mountains before continuing north towards Christchurch.
Geraldine
On the way to Christchurch, stop in Geraldine.
In spring, the gardens around the region add another splash of colour to the road trip. If you’re travelling in October or November, consider visiting Mulvihill Country Garden, located between Geraldine and Fairlie, where you can find rhododendrons, azaleas, tulips and irises.
Geraldine also makes a pleasant stop before the final part of the journey.
Christchurch
Finish your road trip in Christchurch, where you can enjoy the spring flowers one last time.
Hagley Park is one of the places to see cherry blossoms in spring, while the Christchurch Botanic Gardens offer a variety of seasonal flowers.

A one-way road trip

A few tips before hitting the road
Spring can be a particularly changeable season. Pack layers, a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
If you’re travelling to photograph the flowers, keep in mind that weather conditions can quickly affect the flowering period. Try not to build your entire trip around one specific date.
For lupins, also make sure you allow enough time: Lake Tekapo is not a destination to rush through on a day trip from Queenstown.
Finally, stay on public land and marked tracks. Some of the most photographed lupin fields are located on private property.
Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose your itinerary based on the type of flowers you want to see: Queenstown and its surroundings for the first spring blooms, or the Mackenzie Basin for the late-spring lupins.
